SODIUM THIOPENTAL
- Considered a member of the barbiturate family which also doubles as a sedative.
- A yellow-ish powder that is stabilized anhydrous sodium carbonate to create the buffer placed in vials for injection through the veins.
- Affects the Central Nervous System and causes muscle relaxation, pain and anxiety reduction, coughing, sneezing, and respiratory depression.
- An Acute toxin. Effects start as soon as subject is exposed.
- Can put subjects into a deep sleep, and can reach the brain in less than 30 seconds. Rapid exposure can lead to serious life-threatening effects.
- 5 grams (5,000 milligrams) is all is considered the lethal dose. Inmates facing the lethal injection must withstand this dosage.
